Gear Up to Reach The Top

The right climbing gear is vital to success as a climber. Since The High School League practices at the River Sports Climbing Center, the amount of equipment is less than what you would need to climb a mountain. The first thing you need is a harness. This makes sure you are safe on top rope routes and keeps you from falling. Another important thing is your climbing shoes. The shoes protect your feet from rough rocks and scraping. Your shoes should fit tight around your entire foot. There are many types of shoes including neutral, aggressive, and moderate. They can also be made of different materials like leather or synthetics. In addition, chalk and a chalk bag are extremely helpful for slippery hands and holds. The chalk bag is designed to hold the chalk inside while climbing but allow your hand to access the chalk. The final piece of equipment one should have is tape. When a climber’s hands get torn up and blistered, taping them reduces the friction. In Round 3, all the schools did wonderfully using the right equipment.

Competitive Spirit

A competitive spirit is key for success in many sports. However, finishing first isn’t necessarily the most important goal in climbing competitions. Yes, climbers want to become better but they are also supportive of other climbers. You will find that everyone claps when someone makes it and encouraging cheers are commonplace. The High School League is very much a community. Even when a climber falls, all the others still applaud their efforts and congratulate them for going that far. When someone is stuck, students yell helpful suggestions and tips. Maryville, Homeschool, Webb, Anderson County, and Central demonstrated this sportsmanlike attitude in the third and fourth competitions.

Scoring: Who Wins?

Scoring is a vital part of any competitive league and climbing is no exception. To score points a climber must touch a handhold. The climber doesn’t have to touch each and every handhold but they should keep advancing. It is ideal for the person to reach the top but the climber still gets points even if they don’t make it all the way. To finish a route or problem, the climber must touch both hands to the final handhold and additionally, make sure the judge can see it. If a person touches a hold of the wrong color, it is the same as if the climber had fallen. Points are cumulative for the entire season, meaning after all the competitions, the points are added up for all the competitors. The goal for students is to improve personal scores and while you belong to a team, there are no team scores. Bouldering problems are generally worth less points than top rope routes and you get two attempts at bouldering. A climber is only allowed one attempt on top ropes. A judge on the ground keeps track of and records the scores. For the first two competitions of Round 2 this week, West, Paideia, Independent, Bearden, and Hardin Valley climbers added points to their total scores.

End of Round 1

Round 1 came to a close on Saturday, October 27th at the 4th competition between West, Hardin Valley, and Central. In competitions, there are routes and problems specifically for men and for women. Everyone climbs the same routes and problems throughout the round. The routes and problems are currently being changed and reset this week in preparation for Round 2. Congratulations to all High School League on completing Round 1 and good luck on Round 2!

Strategic Climbing

The feeling a climber experiences at the top of a particularly difficult route is unlike any other. It is rare to complete a top rope route or bouldering problem on the first try. Rather than working on your own during practice, teammates all try the same route or problem in groups. While working on it, the climbers try different handholds and footholds. You have to use logic to find your way up. At competitions, the climbers apply these problem-solving skills on routes and problems they’ve never done before. This is a little different from practice because you have to think on your feet but it’s the same principles. Webb and Maryville competed in the 2nd competition on Saturday, October 20.  The 3rd competition was between Bearden and Anderson County on Tuesday, October 23.

Hello 2018 Competitions!

Climbing: drawing or pulling oneself up, over, or to the top of by using hands and feet; to go upward with gradual or continuous progress. However, there’s a little more to it than a dictionary definition at the Climbing Center. There are two types of climbing: top rope and bouldering. Top Rope is more of an endurance route, allowing climbers to clip their harness into an auto-belay rope and make their way to the top. Bouldering involves a shorter path, in which students can only go up to the bouldering line. With both kinds of climbing, they are marked with colored tape indicating the difficulty. Using these routes or problems, all the high school teams attend practice at least once a week to acquire and sharpen skills. In a practice, not only do students have access to the top rope and bouldering, they also have each other. Teammates yell encouragement, tips, hand placements, or foot placements to each other. Groups of people all attempt the same route or problem and each tries a new method in hopes of conquering it. Practices may seem unnecessary but when people work hard during practice, it becomes apparent in competitions. High school league competitions consist of 3 top rope routes and 2 bouldering problems. The first competition of the 2018-2019 season took place on Tuesday, October 16th between Paideia, Independent, and Homeschool.
